The Importance of Biodiversity

Official logo The year 2010 was declared the International Year of Biodiversity.  The International Year of Biodiversity (IYB) is a year-long celebration of biological diversity and its value for life on Earth, taking place around the world in 2010.  Ecosavvykid, Colin Caton, interviews local wetland scientist, Mike Ball, about the importance of biodiversity in our coastal wetlands. Colin's interview is filmed entirely in front of Wellfleet's Herring River Restoration Project. For more information about the project, go to: www.friendsofherringriver.org.

Understanding The Honey Bee
On June 2, Colin and mom, had a blast interviewing Laura Kelley, owner of Littlefield Landscapes, and an organic beekeeper--amongst her other talents.  We learned an incredible amount about honey bees, the importance of having the honey bee in our life and how much we all rely on their being on this earth for our survival.  We've posted a series of Colin's interviews for you to watch and over the next week we will be adding more information.  Thanks so much to Laura for the great time too!

Use Your Local Car Wash  (click on title to see video)

Did you know washing your car at your local car wash can save 100 gallons of water a wash! "Few people realize that washing our cars in our driveways is one of the most environmentally un-friendly chores we can do around the house. Unlike household waste water that enters sewers or septic systems and undergoes treatment before it is discharged into the environment, what runs off from your car goes right into storm drains -- and eventually into rivers, streams, creeks and wetlands where it poisons aquatic life and wreaks other ecosystem havoc. After all, that water is loaded with a witch’s brew of gasoline, oil and residues from exhaust fumes -- as well as the harsh detergents being used for the washing itself." Cape Cod Beer is an excellent example of a local company that makes recycling a priority at home and at work.  Here is the ecosavvykid interviewing Beth Marcus and her two sons.  You will learn about their recycling efforts at work and at home.  They are a family that "talks the talk and walks the walk."
